Agent Skills: reusable instructions for the builder

A skill is a set of instructions you write once and the builder follows whenever it fits, in every app in your workspace. Here's how to create one, use it, and add skills from a link.

What a skill is

A skill is a set of instructions for the builder that you write once and reuse. Think of it as a saved brief: your brand voice, how you like pages laid out, the steps you always want for a sales page, rules for your copy.

Skills belong to your workspace, so every app in that workspace can use them. They work as soon as you save them.

How the builder uses skills

The builder sees a short list of your skills: each one's name and one-line description. When a request matches a skill, it reads that skill's full instructions and follows them. Skills that don't fit the request stay out of the way.

You can also tell it to use a skill. Type / followed by the skill's name anywhere in your message, for example /brand-voice. Typing / opens a list of your skills to pick from. This works in the editor chat, and in the box on your dashboard when you're starting a new app.

Create a skill

  1. Open your account menu and click Agent Skills. The page is called AI Skills. In the editor you can also click Manage skills.
  2. Click New Skill.
  3. Fill in:
    • Name: this becomes the shortcut. Brand Voice becomes /brand-voice.
    • Description (optional): one line on when the skill should be used. The builder reads this to decide when to load it, so make it clear.
    • Instructions: what the builder should do, in plain words. Up to 30,000 characters.
  4. Click Create Skill.

To pause a skill without deleting it, click its On switch on the AI Skills page to turn it Off.

Tips for good skills

  • Keep each skill to one job. Brand voice and Checkout page layout work better as two skills than one.
  • Write the description as Use when…. For example: Use when writing headlines or page copy.
  • Be specific. Short sentences, no exclamation marks, always say 'members' not 'users' beats sound friendly.

Some sites share ready-made skills. Paste the link in the editor chat and ask the builder to add them. It shows a card with the skills it found. Nothing is added until you click Install on that card. The builder can't install skills by itself. If you don't see Install, ask a workspace admin.

  • A link can bring in up to 10 skills.
  • If you already have a skill with the same shortcut (/name), that one is skipped, so your own skills are never overwritten.
  • Installed skills work like the ones you write. You can edit or turn them off on the AI Skills page.

Good to know

  • Skills apply to the app builder. They are separate from the app's own AI features.
  • There's no separate charge for skills. When the builder loads one, its instructions are added to what it reads for that message, so a very long skill adds a little to that message's credits.

Build with Overskill, not against it

The single biggest way to get more out of your credits: lean on what Overskill already gives you instead of asking it to rebuild things from scratch. Here's how to spot the difference.
