Accrual

Accrual is the administration and funding record of an occupational defined-benefit pension scheme — the file that decides what each member is owed and whether the scheme can actually pay it. Its signature screen is an Isotype membership plate. The entire membership is drawn as rows of flat pictograms, one figure standing for one hundred members, each status class on its own row with its remainder drawn as a dashed partial figure. The key is printed beside it, and the plate closes three independent ways: the four class rows sum to the total (205 actives + 1,243 deferreds + 812 pensioners + 172 dependants = 2,432); the pictograms themselves reconcile (23 figures × 100 = 2,300, plus 132 carried in remainders = 2,432); and a reader can simply count the figures in any row and recover that class's number. It is a figure you can falsify three ways without leaving the page. The funding position is held to the same standard. Assets of £794.6m are set against technical provisions of £904.1m, and the £109.5m deficit is exactly their difference; the 87.9% funding ratio is exactly their quotient; and the stated 17.6-point improvement over the cycle is exactly the gap from the 2023 position of 70.3%. A drawn SVG bridge chart decomposes that movement into its named contributions, every segment summing to the stated total, and the recovery plan sets the deficit-repair schedule out year by year with the cumulative total tracked against the deficit it is repairing. Nothing is hand-typed: every rendered figure, including panel captions, derives from a single membership registry classified exactly once. The rest of the record is built out as a working product. There is the membership record itself with liabilities per class; CETV transfer-value quotations with their guarantee expiry dates and take-up; the employer covenant grading with its inputs and the trustee's stated reliance period; the trustee board with its composition, quorum rule and minuted decisions; the full triennial valuation cycle laid out as six horizontally-scrolling plates from the effective date to the statutory filing deadline; and a signed-in member portal holding one member's own accrued pension, revaluation history, nominated beneficiary and personal CETV quotation. The member-facing explanations are written in plain words — final salary, revaluation, payment for life — not in actuarial shorthand. The visual language is Isotype pictorial statistics in the Otto Neurath and Gerd Arntz tradition, set on a Dutch modernist annual-report grid: paper white, a strict visible module, two flat spot inks (one ultramarine, one vermilion) and nothing else, oversized Big Shoulders Display numerals set tight against small caption type, in Hanken Grotesk and Azeret Mono. Data is communicated by counting repeated figures rather than by measuring bars. There is no photography; all forty-one pieces of imagery are drawn SVG. Adapt it for any trustee board, scheme administrator, actuarial consultancy, master trust or benevolent fund that has to report a membership, a funding position and a repair plan to people who are owed money.
