Bushel

Bushel is the settlement desk for a farmers' cooperative grain elevator — the back office that turns a truckload of corn, soybeans or wheat into an exact dollar figure owed to a member, with every step of the arithmetic ruled out on the page where anyone can check it. It starts at the scale. Each inbound load becomes a scale ticket carrying gross, tare and net weight, the commodity, the member, the bin it was binned to, and the probe results — moisture and test weight. Bushel applies the co-op's published discount schedule against those results: shrink per point of moisture over the standard (15.0% corn, 13.0% soybeans, 13.5% wheat), a drying charge per point, and a test-weight discount per pound under standard. The adjusted net bushels, not the raw scale weight, are what the member actually gets paid for, and the ticket shows both. From there grain either sells or sits. Open storage accrues at a per-bushel-per-day rate after a free-day window; a deferred-price agreement leaves title with the member and the price unfixed. Bushel prices unfixed bushels against the futures board plus the local basis, tracks each contract's fixed and unfixed balance, and shows the position — how much of the crop is priced, how much is exposed, and what the basis has done. The cash-bid board is the public face: corn, soybeans and wheat across the delivery months, each row carrying the cash bid, the underlying futures, the basis and the day's change, chalked up the way an elevator office actually posts them. Inside, the member-facing product is the settlement sheet — a single document that walks from gross weight through discounts and shrink to storage accrued, advances recouped and net dollars payable, so a farmer and a merchandiser can sit on opposite sides of the counter and agree on the number.
