Gateway

Gateway is the complete operating record of an independent end-point assessment organisation — the body that assesses an apprentice at the END of their apprenticeship, against the published occupational standard, after their employer and training provider have signed them through the gateway. It is not a training provider, not a school and not an exam hall: it is the independent assessor of record, and this is the file it keeps. The record opens on the gateway itself. Forty-eight apprentices sit on the gateway register, and the fold states the partition on its face — 48 = 31 accepted + 9 pending + 6 returned + 2 withdrawn — so the arithmetic is shown rather than asserted. Every presentation carries its gateway checklist: minimum duration served, English and maths attained, portfolio submitted, employer declaration signed. A gateway decision is ACCEPTED, RETURNED or WITHDRAWN, and a returned apprentice carries the reason they were returned. Behind the gateway sits the standards library: each occupational standard the organisation is approved to assess, its assessment plan, the methods and their weightings, and the grading descriptors that decide the difference between a pass, a merit and a distinction. Assessment bookings record windows, locations, remote invigilation and the reasonable adjustments granted. The assessor register holds each independent assessor, their occupational competence evidence, their standardisation attendance and — the part that makes independence real — their declared conflicts of interest with employers and providers. Grading and moderation record the awarded grade beside the descriptor it was awarded against, with moderation samples and any grade change and its reason. External quality assurance records EQA visits, sampling, findings and the actions taken. Certification claims track what was submitted to the apprenticeship service and what came back rejected. Appeals and complaints record the grounds, the stage, the independent panel and the outcome. The whole record is pinned to a fixed as-of date of 6 October 2026, assessment year 2026/27, so nothing drifts. Visually, Gateway is an HfG Ulm workshop poster crossed with a two-colour risograph zine, c.1962–1975. Two flat spot inks — a fluorescent riso orange and a deep ultramarine — sit on warm newsprint, with deliberate visible misregistration where the plates overlap and a third colour that exists only where orange overprints blue. A rational Ulm grid runs underneath; cheap, tactile, slightly misaligned riso printing sits on top. Oversized concentric-arc diagrams are the actual navigation rather than decoration, a pinned progress rail advances through gateway, assessment, grading, EQA, certification and appeal as you scroll, and every number is set in tabular monospace. Every illustration, diagram, stamp and seal is drawn as inline SVG — there is no raster imagery anywhere in the template. Built for awarding organisations, EPAOs, assessment bodies, professional institutes and any organisation that has to prove an independent judgement was made fairly, recorded completely and can be audited after the fact.
